Some unknown facts about Playing cards

There are some facts we miss to see while playing cards. We spend days playing our 13 card rummy or other favourite games, but these basic facts miss our eye:

  • The King of diamonds brandishes an axe whereas all the other kings carry swords.
  • The King of diamonds is also the only one-eyed king and he is the only king without hands.
  • All three Kings other than the King of hearts have a moustache.
  • Only the King of spades faces right.
  • Only the Queen of spades among all of the Queens faces rightward.
  • All four carry flowers, but only the Queen of spades has a sceptre.
  • The heart and spade Jacks are one eyed and face one another in profile, whereas the other two Jacks are two-eyed and face each other in a ¾ view.
  • The Jack of hearts alone carries a leaf, and each Jack holds a different object: a sceptre, an axe, a sword or a spear.

Play Mind Games! with your opponents

Rummy is a game that requires great concentration, tactics and skill, every single time someone acts out their turn. Each decision can, and ultimately will, affect how the game progresses and how Rummy will end.

By training yourself to concentrate for longer periods you will be putting yourself at an advantage over your opponents in Rummy. Rummy by its very nature is a fast paced game and by being able to focus you will be able to evaluate more accurately where you stand in a particular hand.

Ensure you pay close attention to the discarded cards pile in Rummy, as doing so will let you know what cards are still left in the game and which cards you should not expect to receive from your opponents. The other advantage of keeping tabs on the discard pile in Rummy is you should be able to use the information gathered to narrow the range of hands your opponent holds.

In Rummy both you and your opponent have to discard a card to complete your turn. When discarding it is possible to run a small bluff by say discarding the seven of hearts when you hold the five and six of spades. Doing this may lead your opponent to think you do not need any sevens and your chances of him discarding one will be greater than before.

Just following the three small tips above will put you at a distinct advantage, in Rummy, over your online opponents!!

Origin of the name “Rummy”

Where did the name “Rummy” come from? No one knows for sure, although there are a few theories:

  • “Rum” is British slang for “odd” or “peculiar” or “queer” – perhaps their first reaction on learning the particular mechanics of the new game Rummy.
  • There is a game called “Rum Poker” that bears a strong resemblance to Rummy, and indeed is believed by some to be the antecedent for the entire family of Rummy games.
  • Some have suggested that Rummy was originally played for rum (the alcoholic drink), with the loser of a hand buying the next round.
  • An early rulebook spelled it as “Rhum” or “Rhummy”, suggesting a European derivation (“rhum” is a word used in may French-speaking locales).
  • The name Rummy may be based on the words “rumbullion” or “rumbustion”, meaning “a great tumult or uproar”.
  • The Dutch word “roemer” (pronounced “rummer”), a drinking glass used by Dutch sailors, may be the origin of the word “rum” (the drink), and so of the game Rummy.

David Parlett has an amusing quote regarding the subject of the origins of the word “Rummy“, and it’s possible relation to the drink “rum”:  “The origins of Rummy would therefore appear to be lost not so much in the mists of time as in the alcoholic haze of history.”

Murky Origins of Indian Rummy

For decades since the long period of British rule, card games such as Poker, Bridge and Rummy have been immensely popular across India where they are played both socially and within the family. Indian Rummy is a fun rummy game with a big sense of tradition. It is particularly popular in card rooms and casinos across India where, in certain jurisdictions, classic Rummy is a wagering game played in many a Rummy club. Little is known about the origin and history of Indian Rummy.

It is possible that Indian Rummy is derived from the United States as it plays like a cross between Gin Rummy and Rummy 500. It is similar to Rummy 500 in that it is played with 13 cards, one or two decks, two or more players and usually jokers (wild cards). However in the overall simplicity of turn by turn play, it is a lot more like Gin Rummy, which is its closest relative. If you like Gin Rummy, you are very likely to enjoy Indian Rummy. These rules were written for an offline, real life card playing situation but they are equally applicable to the online version which can be played right here at Taashtime.com
