Which card to discard – How to rummy series!

2.2 Which card to discard – several situations? – How to rummy series!

Discarding the right card is as important as picking the right card to emerge as a skilled rummy player!

In Chapter 1.2 and 1.3 we have discussed about:

1.2 How to pick and discard cards?

1.3 How to observe the discarded cards and what to do about it?

Those are basics of discarding a card, let us now discuss understand more about discarding which card.

While discarding player needs to keep the following basic rules of rummy in mind

  1. Winning every time is not possible, although every player plays to win
  2. Give least score if any other player wins the game
  3. If player doesn’t win it is fine, but he needs to see that the other player doesn’t win before he reduces his score to the least and holds the other player from winning.
  4. Mostly big cards are discarded by all the players because of above basic rules
  5. All the players discard useless cards hence they are not making sets around it
  6. Calling cards are thrown by skilled player

Skilled players generally discard a connecting/supporting card if they believe it is not going to be useful to the next player

Situation 1.

It is important that one starts observing the discards from others before planning what cards to be discarded.

In the above picture one can observe that there is a discards button on the top right corner which should be clicked to check the discards by all players.

Once the game starts players will start discarding, that is the time one needs to start following the discarded cards.

As in the above picture one can observe that the player has received Clubs K from Closed deck, and he was already having Hearts 10 to be discarded.

The player now has to decide which card to discard, weather Clubs K or Hearts 10.

In the above picture we could also see that the discarded card from Pachaimani the next player who would receive the card from the player is Clubs Q.

There are two ways to study the cards

  1. Throw the card which will be next to the card thrown by the next player, this will be not useful to the next player in most of the cases, but the next player has 2 clubs Q and decided to throw one of it as a calling card then player ends up giving most important card to the next player.
  2. Throwing Hearts 10 which could act as a calling card as the player has Hearts Q and K, and the player who needs to give the open card, will think that we may not need the adjacent card Hearts J and throws the same as open card which then can be used as sequence card.

But out of both the above ways mentioned it is better to take the 1st way as his decision should be more on assumptions made on know factors ( clubs Q was thrown) than unknown factors (Hearts Jack) card available with his upper hand player.

By doing so! Kaliranjan (Player who needs to give a open card to player) would think that both clubs Q and clubs K are thrown by other two players hence clubs J wouldn’t be of much use and he could throw the same.

In the above picture we observe that Kaliranjan has preciously did the same as we assumed, he has discarded Clubs J which we would need for our clubs 9 and 10 to make a set.

One more important thing is to closely observe what cards are discarded continuously by players who are taking cards from the player and also player who is giving cards and stick to the suit which is not being picked the next player

As in above picture we can see that Kingofkings ( the player) has kept discarding Hearts cards, as none of this cards were being picked by the next player

Or one can throw the cards which are already discarded by the next player Pachaimani, hence one should observe the next player’s discarded cards.

here discarding a spade 7  or

In the above picture we can see that the player has discarded Diamond 10 which was already discarded at the starting by the next player Pachaimani.

At the end we see a pattern in the cards discarded

Discards of Immediate player (Pachaimani)

Here you can observe that clubs and spades more than diamonds and heart cards.

Discards of the player who gives open card to the player(Kaliranjan)

Here we can observe that he was discarding all big cards mostly

Discards of the player(Kingofkings)

The player was discarding more of hearts and diamonds.

If closely observed the discarded cards of Pachaimani and Kingofkings we will see a pattern,

  1. Clubs K was discarded as Pachaimani has discarded clubs Q
  2. Pachaimani has discarded Hearts Q and hence Hearts all the big cards(10,J,K) were discarded by Kingofkings
  3. Spades 7 and diamond 10 was discarded by Pachaimani hence Kingofkings has discarded the same cards

Most of this was done keeping the next player in mind than observing Kaliranjans discards.

In Rummy observing discarded cards help a player to become a professional and skilled player!
