Wild Card – Joker in Indian Rummy

21 Apr

In the deck of cards, there are 4 suits, 13 cards per suit and 1 joker! The joker is used as  a wild card in the game of rummy. This post describes in greater detail the role of a joker in the game of rummy!

The colorful joker cartoons date back a long long time in the history of cards.

What is a joker?

A joker is a wild card – i.e. it can replace any other card.

Dos and Don’ts with Jokers

  • A joker can be used to replace only one card and not multiple times. For example, if you have A,K, Joker, 9, 10. The joker can either replace a J, Q or 8. Once the value of the joker is chosen, it is fixed while melding. This single joker can not replace both Q and J at the same time!
  • Jokers can be used in both sequences and sets.
  • Jokers can not be used in addition to a quatruplet (K,K,K,K). [i.e. if you have all four suits of Kings and a joker, the joker can not be used to extend the quatruplet!
  • A joker can be used to extend any sequence.
What all are considered as jokers?
In Indian Rummy, once 13 cards are dealt to all the players, an open card is kept face up. After this, the dealer randomly chooses one card from the closed deck and puts it face up at the bottom of the deck. This is the joker for the game. All cards with the same face value are also considered jokers. The suit does not matter. As long as a player has a card with the same face value, it is considered a joker.
In a typical game, there are always 10 jokers in all (2 Jokers one from each deck, 1 joker at the bottom of the closed deck and the remaining 7 in play! ) of which 9 are in play!
In online rummy, if a joker is discarded (on purpose or by mistake), it can not be picked up by the next player!
